DESCRIPTION:UC San Diego Researchers Celebrate "Older Americans" Month       May is older Americans month\, a time to honor and celebrate those who make our families and communities stronger.  Researchers with UC San Diego's TREDS (Training\, Research and Education for Driving Safety) program along with The Caregiver Coalition of San Diego are hosting a free seminar “Aging and Driving: What You Need to Know” from 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.\, Friday May 11\, 2012 at First United Methodist Church\, Linder Hall\, 2111 Camino Del Rio South\, San Diego\, California.         "Our goal is to help older drivers stay safe behind the wheel for as long as possible\," said Linda Hill\, MD\, MPH\, clinical professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine.  "Sometimes the solution is as easy as a new pair of glasses or some driver re-training.  Then\, of course\, there are times when we must face the possibility that the aging driver should no longer be on the road."         Presentation subjects range from the effects of aging on driving and communication strategies\, to information about driving skills classes\, and alternative transportation options in San Diego County.         "We are focusing on interventions to assist older drivers who may be at risk for a crash due to age-related health impairments\," explained Hill.  “Adult children of older drivers will often contact us seeking advice or referrals\, and this seminar is designed to inform family members and caregivers as well.  If these issues are left unaddressed\, there is a risk of injury not only to the older adults themselves\, but also to their families and to others who share the road. Adult children of older drivers will often contact us seeking advice or referrals\, and this seminar is designed to inform family members and caregivers as well.”         In addition to the UC San Diego School of Medicine\, other presenters include: American Association of Retired Persons; California Department of Motor Vehicles; Sharp Memorial Rehabilitation; SD County Volunteer Driver’s Coalition; and Southern Caregiver Resource Center.​         Background:  According to the California Office of Traffic Safety in 2008\, San Diego County ranked 22nd in fatal and injury collisions\, out of 58 counties with populations over 250\,000.  San Diego County’s population is 1\,233\,000\, with 10.5% of individuals 65 and over; this population is rapidly increasing in San Diego County\, as elsewhere.         Most age-related driving disorders (ARDDs) fall into three areas: impaired vision\, physical limitations\, and declining mental acuity.  In addition\, medication side effects can interfere with safe driving and studies have found that approximately half of older adults are on five or more medications. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the California Senior Games/North County Senior Games women’s basketball tournament! The CSGA as graciously accepted our request to have the tournament moved to southern California and thus save the majority of the players hundreds of dollars in travel expenses!    This is perhaps the most important tournament of the year\, one you cannot miss if you want to go to the National Senior Games in Cleveland\, Ohio in 2013. It’s the only qualifying tournament in California and we are expecting over 20 teams to attend. So\, get your teams ready to face some great competition and have some fun! Please note: since this is a qualifying year\, we will not be having the 40-49 year olds compete in this tournament. DESCRIPTION:    The Lemon Grove Branch of San Diego County Library is teaming up with local professionals to help the community build healthier lives.  The library is hosting a Community Health Fair on Saturday\, February 25 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at 8073 Broadway.  Health screenings and activities will be available for all ages\, and this event is free to the public.    The Community Health Fair will provide free access to the following health screenings: clinical breast exams\, blood pressure\, HIV\, dental\, cholesterol\, body mass index\, vision\, glucose\, and diabetes.  Mammogram screenings will be available between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.\, and are available by appointment only.  Women must be over age 40\, have no insurance or be underinsured\, qualify as low income\, and must not have had a mammogram in the past year to qualify.  To reserve an appointment for a free mammogram\, contact the branch at (619) 463-9819.  The Lemon Grove Family Health Center will confirm all appointments.    Additionally\, children can enjoy a storytime\, arts and crafts\, face painting\, and can learn about gardening from the Healthy Adventures Foundation.  Partners include Susan G. Laughter Matters promotes the current 23 (and growing!) free Laughter Groups in San Diego County and Laughter Matters’ Volunteer Laughter Yoga Leaders bring Laughter Groups to Senior Communities around San Diego County.    But\, what is Laughter Yoga?  Laughter Yoga is a form of physical and mental exercise that combines fun and simple stretching\, breathing\, laughing and relaxation. One unique feature of Laughter Yoga is that we generate laughter from the body by being playful – we do not rely on jokes or comedy to laugh. Another important feature is that almost anyone can do it regardless of physical or mental condition.    Laughter Matters will bring Laughter Yoga to the San Diego Senior Games on Friday\, November 4\, 2011 at 12:00 pm.   After a brief introduction\, there will be an actual Laughter Yoga session where everyone will get to experience what it like to laugh for no reason like when we were kids.

DESCRIPTION:The “Masters & Legends Surfing Competition” for The San Diego Senior Olympic Games will be held on Sunday\, October 9 at The Pier in Oceanside. The event is open to any man or woman 50 or over. There will be three categories of competition: longboard\, shortboard and stand up. DESCRIPTION:Speaker Information    SAVE-A-HEART   Carlette Anderson founded Save-A-Heart on March 12\, 1988 because she felt there was a need to have available a simpler and easier to understand CPR class. She was a volunteer for other CPR organizations and felt they spent too much unnecessary time on their CPR lecture\,  took too many long breaks and didn't keep the class moving quickly. She created a program that gets right to the point and keeps it simple. As of today Save-A-Heart is still the only organization that teaches a comprehensive 3 hour CPR and First Aid certification class.    Save-A-Heart provides training for HHSA San Diego Foster Parents\, S.D. Dept. of Public Works\, Major Hotel chains\, medical and dental offices and many other organizations and companies.    By profession Mrs. Anderson is a Health and Physical Education teacher. She has been teaching CPR and First Aid for more than 35 years.  Has four grown children and seven grand children. She lives in Alpine with her husband JC\, their black lab Harley and their coy dog Navajo.

This two hour  event will provide an overview and update of the County’s ten-year  health plan\, “Building Better Health.”  This strategy consists of 4  major components which include:    Building Better Systems  Supporting Healthy Choices  Policy Development  Changing the Culture from Within    Your participation and feedback are critical as we move forward on  implementing the plan with our community partners.
